12th Janauary 2009- news from Louth Heritage re Walled Towns Day
Carlingford - This year’s Walled Towns’ Day was even bigger and better, thanks to event funding from Fáilte Ireland, that came through the Irish Walled Towns’ Network.
OPW has been carrying out excavations at King John’s Castle in Carlingford this year. It is still hoped that works needed to permit safe visitor access can be carried out in 2009, so that the castle can be reopened to the public in 2010, the 800th anniversary of English king John’s seizure of the castle.
Drogheda also held a big Walled Towns’ Day/Heritage Week, with Laurence’s Gate open on both Sundays and a specially commissioned play about events in Drogheda in the two sieges in the 1640s being performed there and in the Millmount.
Ardee also took part in Walled Towns’ Day, with the town’s castle and Bridewell open to the public, thanks to Ardee Town Council
